Charco del Palo: what to know before you arrive
Charco del Palo is a small, peaceful village on the rugged north-east coast of Lanzarote, near the village of Mala. Instead of a sandy beach it has natural pools carved into the black lava, filled by the Atlantic at high tide, and a path along the shore with wide views of the ocean. It is known as the island's naturist village, and most visitors stay in low-rise apartments, bungalows and holiday homes a few steps from the water.
What there is in Charco del Palo
The appeal is the calm: no big hotels, no nightlife, just the sea, the rocks and a few restaurants. Swimmers use the ladders into the natural pools, and the coast is good for snorkelling on calm days. Inland, the fields around Mala and Guatiza are covered in prickly pear cactus, once grown to farm cochineal, the insect that gives a red dye.
The ride from the airport
The taxi heads north past Arrecife and along the main road of the north, leaving the busy resorts behind. The last few kilometres turn off towards the sea between cactus fields and stone walls, and the whole ride takes around 40 minutes.
Around Charco del Palo
Some of the island's best-known sights are close: the Cactus Garden at Guatiza is about ten minutes away, and Jameos del Agua and the Cueva de los Verdes, two of César Manrique's works in a lava tube, are a quarter of an hour north. The beach of Arrieta is the nearest stretch of sand.

Book your pick-up about 2 hours and 45 minutes before your flight leaves.
