Famara: what to know before you arrive

Famara, or Caleta de Famara, is a village of low white houses and sandy streets on the north-west coast of Lanzarote. It sits at the end of a beach several kilometres long, under the Risco de Famara, the tall cliffs that run along this part of the island, and across the water you can see La Graciosa and the small islands of the Chinijo archipelago.

What there is in Famara

Famara is the surf capital of the island. Schools and rental shops line the seafront, and the long beach has waves for beginners and experienced surfers. When the wind is right, paragliders take off from the top of the cliffs. The village itself is relaxed and unpretentious, with fish restaurants by the harbour, cafés and small apartments, and the landscape around it is one of the most dramatic on Lanzarote.

The ride from the airport

The taxi crosses the island through the old capital, Teguise, and down towards the coast, a ride of about 35 minutes. The final stretch opens onto the bay and the cliffs, one of the finest views on the island.
