Puerto Calero: what to know before you arrive
Puerto Calero is a small, elegant marina on the south coast, a few minutes west of Puerto del Carmen. It is much quieter than its neighbour: a harbour full of sailing yachts and motor boats, a promenade with restaurants and cafés by the water, a handful of hotels and holiday homes, and the volcanic hills of the south behind it.
What there is in Puerto Calero
Life here revolves around the sea. Catamaran excursions and boat trips leave from the marina, many of them heading south along the coast towards the Papagayo beaches, and there are diving and fishing trips too. The restaurants on the quay are popular for a long lunch or dinner looking at the boats. To the west, the fishing hamlet of Playa Quemada has a small pebble beach and a few seafood restaurants, and a coastal path leads east to Puerto del Carmen in about an hour on foot.
The ride from the airport
The taxi takes the main road south and turns down towards the sea after Puerto del Carmen, about 15 km in around 20 minutes. Some villas and apartments are on the hillside above the marina, so add your exact address or the name of the complex when you book.
Good to know
Puerto Calero is a good choice if you want a calm base close to everything: Puerto del Carmen's beaches and restaurants are five minutes away by car and the airport less than twenty.
